How to Prepare for Your 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Nepal

A practical guide for the weeks before your training: building a steady practice, what to pack for Kathmandu and how to arrive ready to learn.

Joining a 200-hour yoga teacher training is one of the most rewarding decisions you can make for your practice. Twenty-eight days of asana, pranayama, meditation, philosophy and teaching practice ask a lot of the body and mind — and a little preparation makes the whole month richer.

1. Build a steady daily practice

You do not need to touch your toes or balance on your hands. What helps most is consistency. In the six to eight weeks before you arrive, try to practise five or six days a week, even for 30 minutes. Include sun salutations, a few standing poses and a short seated meditation, so long mornings on the mat feel familiar rather than overwhelming.

2. Start reading

Philosophy is a big part of the course. Reading a translation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali or the Bhagavad Gita before you come gives you a head start, and you will get more from the lectures. Note down the questions that come up — your teachers will welcome them.

3. Prepare your body for sattvic food and early mornings

Days at the ashram begin early and meals are simple, fresh and vegetarian. Going to bed earlier and cutting down on caffeine, alcohol and heavy food a couple of weeks before travelling makes the change easy.

4. What to pack

  • Comfortable, modest yoga clothes for daily practice
  • A warm layer and shawl — Kathmandu mornings and evenings can be cool
  • A notebook and pens for lectures and teaching practice
  • A refillable water bottle, sunscreen and any personal medication
  • Your own yoga mat, if you prefer to practise on it

5. Travel and arrival

Many nationalities can get a Nepal tourist visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport — check the current rules for your passport before you fly, and arrive a day early if you can so you are rested on the first morning. New batches start on the 1st of every month.

6. Come with an open mind

The most important thing to bring is curiosity. Teacher training is not a test of flexibility; it is a month of learning about yourself. Let go of comparison, ask questions and enjoy the journey.
